Escaping Samsara

Escaping Samsara

“Escaping Samsara” is a 30 x 22.5” piece made of watercolor and colored pencils. It represents finding enlightenment and the expansion of the conscious through the shift of perceptual awareness. I chose to represent this awakening using the sea because I interpret the ocean as being a commonly overlooked piece of nature. To me, it represents the soul and subconscious. The tranquil surface is a facade to what lies underneath. It hides massive amounts of life and offers an abundance of opportunity through its incredibly unknown depth. The unexplored thoughts and emotions that exist in one’s mind are intimidating, yet beautiful. Discovering enlightenment is gratifying, but it requires much sacrifice and the journey is not always an easy one. That’s why the man looks to be in pain.
